Del Sol Ragnar Relay - Bust Must+

Whoa nelly....it's been awhile since I've blogged.  I did attempt to grace you with my ridiculousness last week but blogger was not having it.  So here I am back to blogging in hopes of keeping this little journal of mine a float. ;)

Last Thursday I ventured on a much needed vacation to Phoenix Arizona to run Del Sol Ragnar.  I had an absolute blast and soaked up plenty of sunshine.  Seriously if you ever have an opportunity to run a relay race do not even hesitate.  This was my 6th and it most definitely did not disappoint.  Team relays in my opinion are the best way to experience the fun side of running.  Training seriously can lead to burnout and this little trip was just what I needed to releive some pressure and remind me of just how fun running should be.

Del Sol Ragnar:  Del Sol Ragnar runs from Wickenburg to Tempe AZ and is 200.5 mi.

Our Team Name:  Bust Must+  From the movie Napoleon Dynamite.  If you haven't seen this movie rent it tonight.  It is the dumbest and stupid funniest 80 minutes you will ever spend in your life.  Totally worth it!



If you've seen the movie you will totally get this.  We were all characters from the movie and Ken was Kip.

The Start:  Our team started at 9am and I was in van #1.  We got to the start at about 8:30am and after getting checked in and passing safety inspection I was off.



Leg #1:  8.7 miles, 543 foot elevation gain.  This was by far my hardest leg of the race with the elevation gain.  But luckily I have been training at a 2% incline on the treadmill throughout the winter and it didn't seem too bad.  A lot of guys started out really fast and I ended up passing 12 of them in the final miles.  I paced 7:30 and felt pretty good.

Thumbs up because I'm about to pass someone on one of the hills and I will no longer have to stare at a big man in a little thong.

See ya later Victoria Secret model dude.  Hope the chaffing from the thong feels better later buddy. :)

Pumped to be finished with leg #1 and to have scored me some sweet flammingo beads.  Ragnar Mardi Gras!
Leg #2:  6 miles, flat.  In a big city with tons of street lights.  This leg started at about 7pm and the weather was perfect!  Getting stopped at lights was super annoying but other than that I felt great and paced 7:14.

Leg #3:  3.5 miles, 241 foot elevation gain.  This leg started at 3:45am and I am convinced I was still half asleep.  We got to the exchange literally right in time for me to run.  When my garmin beeped at mile 1 I looked down to see 8:18!  ha!  After that I kicked it into tenth gear and managed to recover my overall pace to 7:29.  No matter how easy your legs are in Ragnar you are always toast by the least leg no matter what.

Finish Line:  Van #1 was all done running by 8:30am and lucky for us we had time for a shower, a nap, and lots of food.  All you really do on Ragnars is eat, run, and sleep?  Okay really you don't sleep at all but you eat & run and hang out in a van a lot. Ever craved a turkey & cheese sandwhich at 4:30 in the morning?  Run a Ragnar and you'll know what I'm talking about.  There is absolutely no sense of time of day.  Okay I am getting way side tracked......Our team crossed the finish line at about 12:20p.m.  We were the 10th team to cross the finish line.  We were about the 240th team to start so we had plenty of road kill.

Overall Results:  In the mixed division we were team 5/203 and finished in 27:32:44 for an overall average team pace of 8:14.  Not too shabby!

I slept by the pool and soaked up the Arizona sunshine until it was time to return to the dreadful state of Utah.


 Conclusion:  I am moving to Arizona.  I wish!  It was an amazing trip and I am so glad I got to be a part of such a fun group of talented runners.  I made new friends, spent quality time with old friends, ate way too many cinnamon bears and overall just had a blast.  My running was right where I wanted it to be, HM/MP paced tempo runs and I felt great.

Anyone have any questions about Ragnar or how it works?  I am no expert but this was my 6th so I am starting to catch on.

What I'm "Love"-ing

Happy Valentines Day!!  There are so many things I am truly loving in my life right now and what better day to share them with you then on this day dedicated to love!

Loving that the Westlake Girls basketball team coached by my Dad came back after some tough losses and beat the #2 ranked team in 4A with a huge upset.

Loving that I was able to run for such a great cause, in honor of Sherry Arnold over the weekend with awesome friends.



Loving my adorable nieces and nephews.  Mya, Daija and Dreyden turned 2 over the weekend and we all  got together to celebrate.  These little miracles were born 10 weeks premature and they are healthy, strong and loving life. 


Loving that my sweet friend Alisha made the most delicious and adorable cupcakes for the triplets awesome Sesame Street themed party.

So what if the hats were meant just for the kids.  So what!

Loving my family more than ever.  The older I get the more I realize just how lucky I am and just how much I truly love my family.


Loving that I got to run in a massive snow storm Sunday morning.  What a fun and memorable adventure!


So Single awareness day?  I say heck no.  I love Valentines Day and am reminded today of all of the love I am surrounded by.  I feel incredibly blessed to have so much love in my life and can truly say that without a doubt I am living the life I love. ;)

We all Fail

I started this blog post last Friday and am finally getting around to finishing it.  This post is much more of a journal entry for me and for my family but feel free to read a long and if you get bored or can't relate check back for a spoonful of sarcasm with a side of awkward photos soon. ;)

I think I've shared this quote on my blog before.  I absolutely love it and it is one I am reminded of whenever I experience failures or setbacks in my own life.  I firmly believe that we are all strong people and can truly overcome any of lives failures or obstacles with enough optimism, objectivity, and faith before they consume us with negativity and leave us feeling helpless and hopeless.

Last week was a tough week for my family.  It was a week full of very unexpected failures.  No deaths, illnesses, or even major crisis, just a couple of heart wrenching lost basketballs games that made us all feel empty and as if we had failed.  I can completely relate to the sweet LC and her role in her husbands career because I am definitely emotionally attached to my Dad's basketball team this year.  When he loses I want to fix it and make it all better but I can't and his failure becomes my failure.
Needless to say I think my co-workers knew I was on edge last week because when I opened my office Friday morning I found this:
Although my co-workers were only pranking me Use Caution was a perfect description of how to approach this runner that day......with plenty of caution!  I was angry, devastated, frustrated and most of all I was sad for my Dad.  I also realized in that moment that I couldn't fix the fact that my Dad's team lost two crucial basketball games in a row.  What was done was done and in the past and analyzing every aspect was never going to change the outcome. All I could possibly control was the way I reacted to the situation.  I had two choices.  I could succumb to the failure, give up and complain or I could fight like hell for my Dad and continue to support him.  I chose to change my attitude and react with optimism and confidence.

In life we all fail.  Failure is inevitable and without failure we would never appreciate the sweet taste of success.  I fail in running all the time but ironically I rarely remember my failures.  What I do remember is what I learn from each failed attempt and how every failure, if I allow it to, is ultimetely guiding me towards success.  Failure and success are inseperable from our lives and if we succumb to failure and don't find healthy ways to deal with it we will never accomplish our goals or realize our full potential.

If you have confidence in yourself and your abilities, you can overcome any failure in your life.

To myself, my family, the Westlake Girls, or anyone else reading remember you have the power, the skills, and the strength to confront and move on from your failures and let them help you realize your dreams.  Our failures do not define us.  Rather it is our response to moments of weakness that show our true character.

11 Random Things

Alright you've all seen the "11 Random Things" going around the bloggity blog world right?  Last week Stef from Run-On so generously tagged me to play along so here goes.

11 random facts about me - I'm pretty sure if you've been following me for awhile you already know way too much about me so I will try make these new things.....okay or just weird things.

1.  I am incredibly ocd about everything and especially routine.  I eat the same foods everyday at the exact same time, go grocery shopping the same time each week, wake up at the exact same time each morning....you get the point!  I have massive anxiety when my routine gets thrown "off".

2.  I do not like eating out.  I do usually eat out 1-2 times a month with my family but I would so much rather eat at home.

3.  I honestly think my parents are the funniest people alive. Don't you?
Seriously hilarious right?

4.  I suck at grammar.  Their, they're, there, you, you're, you are $#%@!  Yeah um just don't count on me ever using any of it right.  By some miracle I did get an A in college English but I have no idea how......

5.  I am ridiculously cheap.  I shop clearance racks only, clip coupons, and my favorite store is the dollar store.

6.  In High School I could barely run a 13 minute mile.  I almost failed PE.  True Story. Sad day.

7.  I hate leaving my little furbaby Izzy each morning when I go to work.



I do love dressing her up in hideous costumes.  She loves it too can't you tell?

8.  I once won a huge trophy in a 4H sewing competition.  mad skillz!

9.  I can stay in a headstand position for over 15 minutes.....and some wonder why I have no brain cells.

10.  I used to run on the elliptical for one hour each day in college and now I can barely last 5 minutes.

11.  I am obsessed with Yogurt Cones from Maverick.

Football or Baseball?  100% baseball.  Love it!

Would you rather run 50 miles or do 5000 push ups?  Definitely 5,000 pushups.

Where were you born?  Pocetello, ID  (hopefully going back to my place of birth to run the marathon this fall.)

What do you think is your strangest habit?  I have so many!  Maybe the fact that I have to have cottage cheese with dinner every night no matter what I eat.  That one is just a little odd.   

What did you want to be when you grew up?  An actress, a singer, or a gymnast.

If you had to run outside, and could only take ONE item (This includes clothing. You would be naked, essentially) what would it be?  Underwear.  Oh me oh my definitely some big ole granny panty undies.  Can't risk being seen without my granny panties on.

If you could have any kind of furbaby, what would you get?  I honestly think one furbaby is more than enough for me.

Favorite dessert? (greek yogurt, or anything remotely healthy, does not count as dessert)  Strawberry short cake

If you won the lottery today, what would you with your winnings?  Build a huge house with an indoor track and Yogurtland inside.

If you had to choose one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?  Turkey Sandwich

Sushi, like it or hate it?  Honestly never tried it and don't really ever care to.
